Shereen Kumaranatunga heads Women’s Cricket Association

Mrs. Shereen Kumaranatunga, wife of Jeevan Kumaranatunga Deputy Minister of Sports was appointed as president and Jeevan Kumaranatunga as Patron of the Sri Lanka Women’s Cricket Association, the sole controlling body for women’s cricket in Sri Lanka approved by the Ministry of Sports.

Her appointment is a replacement for former President of Sri Lanka Women’s Cricket Association, Ms. C. V. Goonaratne of which C. V. Goonaratne was the patron.

Former Sri Lanka wicket keeper batsman Old Josephian Russel Harmer is the coach of this National Association. The first session of Sri Lanka Women’s National Pool Selections will be held from September 23 to 25 at the Kettarama International Stadium. The pool comprises players from every corner of the country for the purpose of giving them the opportunity of showing their talents at selections. The majority aer outstation players.

The Sri Lanka women’s Cricket Association will conduct an All Island Tournament after the pool selection programme. They will also conduct coaching camps in many districts to develop and introduce the game in the rural areas. To encourage the game the Sri Lanka Women’s Cricket Association donated leather ball cricketing gear to all member clubs and the District Association were donated with a material package and a meeting was held at the Sports Ministry recently.

Makers of Sustagen Sport - M/S J. L. Morrisons made Johnson Nutritions and Nestle Lanka are the organisers for nourishing items during this pool period. J.L. Morrisons and the sponsor for Sustagen for poolists while Nestle Lanka will supply their nourishing items. Co-sponsors are J.L Morrisons, Nestle Lanka and Maxims Ltd. Ratmalana.

The players are requested to report to the Khettarame Stadium on September 23. Practices will continue every weekend around 9.00 a.m.
