957 election related incidents

With just six more days to go for the parliamentary election the number of election related incidents reported to the Elections Secretariat had reached 957 by yesterday.

The highest number of complaints totalling 401 were made by the UNP, while 332 were made by the PA. The complaints made by the JVP had increased to 99 while those made by the SLMC went up to 20, CWC 7 and the independent groups had made 19 complaints.

Among these complaints were 8 murders, 12 incidents of attempted murder by shooting, and 5 attempted murders by the use of bombs.

Further categories of complaints included 15 thefts with firearms, 25 serious hurts, 239 simple hurts, 298 threats and 182 mischiefs. A total of 40 election offences have also been reported to the Elections Secretariat. The number of complaints made to the secretariat from 6 a.m. on Monday to 6 am yesterday were 64. (HJ)
