Responsibility of govt. to avert violence – Malwatte Mahanayake

From Cyril Wimalasurendre
KANDY:
According to information available from many parts of the country preparing for a general election there is murder and mayhem owing mostly to the short-sightedness of political party leaders and their supporters. However, it is the responsibility of the government to take measures to avert this situation to hold a free and fair election in a peaceful environment, the Mahanayake of Malwatte Chapter Ven. Rambukwelle Sri Vipassi Thera said in a statement issued on Tuesday (03).

In this crucial stage the Commissioner of Elections and the police who are expected to discharge their duties should be allowed to exercise their responsibilities by the government to maintain an environment for free and fair elections, the Mahanayake Thero said further in his statement.

The prelate in his written statement has said: "As the country is in progress for a general election on October 10, according to information available there is much tension and even several lives have been lost due to violence in many parts of the country. This I believe is due to the short-sightedness of the members of some political parties and their supporters.

Our country is subjected to a worst type of terrorism. Violence of war has ravaged our country. A general election takes place in the midst of this dreadful situation. This should be specially realised by the leaders of the political groups, their supporters and the organisers.

By now, we should not forget the fact that a large number of our national leaders have been killed in cold blood by the terrorists.

In the wake of this situation it is the duty and responsibility of all those who have a say in this election to grant full freedom to the masses to exercise their free vote, a blessing by democracy, in favour of the political party, group or person of their choice.

The Commissioner of Elections and the Police should be permitted to exercise their freedom to create an environment without being threatened or intimidated.

At a time when even wild animals are in a state of helplessness it is our duty and responsibility to act with patience and a sense of responsibility to protect our land, race and the national resources, and choose the best political party suitable to administer the affairs of the country.

Even after the election results were announced every one should take utmost care to refrain from creating a violent situation in the country which will end up in destruction of lives and property.

This is the only and final statement I issue in connection with the general election," the prelate has added.
