Police, army on alert to ensure law and order

Fifty-thousand policemen along with the army will be deployed to maintain law and order on the general election day tomorrow, Acting Inspector General of Police, Anandarajah said.

In addition, the general security in the country would be strengthened and all police stations have been ordered to maintain mobile patrols in their respective divisions.

Anti-riot squads and police in civvies would also be deployed to apprehend rioting gangs and Tiger suspects, acting IGP further said.

Meanwhile, helicopters will be used to check on the security situation in the country.

Police and the army would man every hundred metres of the road along which ballot boxes are transported from the polling stations to the counting centres. This would be in addition to the police security provided for vehicles transporting ballot boxes. Crowding near polling stations, attempting to influence voters would be severely dealt with.

Rioters and impersonators would be arrested on the spot and would be detained in terms of the Emergency Law. Action has also been taken to counteract Tiger suicide bombers attempting to explode bombs near counting centres, Acting IGP, Anandarajah said.
