India K/O Australia and enter semis

Mike Andree reporting frp m Nairobi, Kenya
Superb fielding, crowd support and sheer determination saw India oust reigning World Champions Australia by 20 runs in the first quarter final of the ICC Knock-out Championship, at the Gymkhana grounds here yesterday.

Yuvaraj Singh who scored 84 in only 80 balls with 12 fours and followed it up with a superb direct hit, to send back danger man Michael Bevan and also held on to a brilliant diving catch to get rid of Ian Harvey, was named "Man of the Match".

India, sent into bat got off to a sound start with skipper Ganguly and Tendulkar putting on 66 runs. Ganguly scored 24 runs but Tendulkar was more aggressive, hitting three sixes and as many fours in his 37-ball knock of 38. Yuvraj Singh, coming in at No. 5 with the score on 90, paced out his innings and was the eighth wicket to fall at 239.

India’s innings closed at 265 for nine, with a six by Vinod Prasad off Harvey. Aussie pacie, McGrath of whom much was expected failed to live upto expectations.

Australia chasing 266 for victory in 48 overs after having been penalized two overs for maintaining a slow over rate, got into the chase with gusto but two run-outs via direct hits and some superb catches and ground fielding kept them from the target as they fell short by 20 runs being all out for 245 in 46.4 overs.

A fourth wicket stand of 73 in 12.5 overs, between Ponting and Bevan saw the Aussies in with a chance. Ponting on 46 then attempted to swipe Tendulkar and was caught by the diving Robin Singh, Bevan then was run out when on 42. Brett Lee then turned batsman and clobbered three fours and two sixes in a quick fire 28-ball knock of 31.

India now move into the semi finals.
