Minister should be personally liable - Ravi’s motion

UNP MP Ravi Karunanayake has requested the Secretary General of the Parliament to place on the Order Book several Private Member’s Motions. One of them is as follows;

"Ministers to be held personally responsible for all the actions of the Ministry". This motion further envisions that "if incompetence and inefficiency has led to a pecuniary loss to the detriment of the country, the Minister should be personally liable and that legal action would be instituted against him".

The other motions propose legislation to allow all Sri Lankans living outside the country to vote at elections in the future, the ensuring of the right of individual students and parents to decide the medium of instruction in schools, and the abolition of pensions for members of parliament.

In addition, he recommends the setting up of several select committees. These would be set up to investigate "the alarming trend of a rapid reduction in receiving aid and grants; to obtain information related to flooding in the Colombo district and to make recommendations towards eradicating it; investigate the truth behind the mysterious deaths of media personnnel such as Mailvaganem Nimalarajan (BBC), Ramesh (Thinakaran) and Rohana Kumara (Satana).
