UNP Deputy Leader Karu Jayasuriya in a letter to the Editor ‘The Island’ states.

I am writing with reference to the article ‘Sad exit of Atukorale’ appearing in The Island of 29.11.2000. On Wednesday November 22 at a meeting summoned by the party leader attended by Gamini Atukorale, Charitha Ratwatte and me, a final decision was reached as to the new appointments of General Secretary and Treasurer of the UNP.

These names will be presented to the 46th Annual Convention of the UNP on December 03 2000 for ratification. The new office bearers will take office from the 1st of January 2001. In the meantime the new office bearers will be operating from the Party Headquarters to prepare for the transition including the establishment of a Central Office. A resolution to this effect has already been presented to the Party Annual Convention.
