KANDY: A Reserve Police Constable and two others travelling in a van on the Nuwara Eliya Road were taken into custody by police at a check point on the Gampola-Pussellawa Road on Tuesday night, with an American made firearm and a haul of ammunition.

The arrest was made when the weapons and the ammunition were recovered from a special chamber of the vehicle, police said.

The Reserve Police Constable from Giriulla and his two accomplice were present in the area with the objective of committing a robbery, Gampola police suspected.

The explosives included eight live cartridges of the special weapon manufactured in the USA, seven live bullets and two cartridges that could be used in a T 56 revolver, police disclosed.

The suspects and the vehicle are in police custody pending further investigations.

Investigations are conducted by CI Lakshman Weerasekera HQI Gampola, SI Walter Welivitige, PCs Chandrasekera, Ratnayake and Rupasinghe on the directions of DIG Sirisena Herath and SP Illangasinghe.
