Mercantile Athletic Federation Championships

Ten new records established

Ten meet records were established, at the revived Mercantile Athletic Federation annual championships concluded, at the Reid Avenue Sports Grounds last Sunday.

Sri Lankan Airlines emerged overall champions at the meet, in which over 400 athletes from 28 Firms participated. Airport & Aviation Services finished as overall runners up.

Pradeep Nishantha, of Sierra Construction Ltd., hurled the Javelin to a distance 65.92 metres to carry away the Best Performer’s award for Men. Jayamini Illeperuma of Hatton National Bank emerged the Best Performer in the Women’s championships.

Sriyani Kulawansa of Hatton National Bank and Damayanthi Dharsha of Pan Asia could not participate as they were undergoing off season training out of Colombo. Nimmi Soysa of Pramuka Bank had to miss the event as she was sitting the Banking Examination held that day.

Hatton National Bank Managing Director Rienzie Wijetileka was the chief guest and gave away the awards.
