1995,1996 Bribery Commission performance reports out

Certain information regarding the performance of the Bribery Commission is made available to the public in its 1995 and 1996 reports. According to which, in 1995 the commission has filed 3098 complaints, the Office of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (OCIABC) said. "In 2629 of the complaints investigations were launched, while in 469 no investigations could be pursued owing to the lack of material upon which an investigation ought to be conducted or because they were not offences coming within the purview of the ACT pertaining to the Commission," the OCIABC said.

According to them investigations were completed in 1798 of them. "Of this prosecution was entered into in 159 complaints," the OCIABC report said. While in 1541 complaints investigations could not be proceeded with because of the lack of evidence, they further added.

According to the 1996 report, 2983 complaints were received. "Out of this 2014 complaints were referred for investigations," the report said. In 969 complaints no investigations were carried out as they were not offences which came under the Commission purview. 159 complaints had been filed in Courts.

The OCIABC said that around 882 complaints had been received following the appointment of the new Commission. According to the report, 466 of these complaints have been referred for investigation while the rest were set a side due to the lack of sufficient material to conduct investigations or they did not come under the Commissions purview. The Commission report adds that 102 cases are pending in different Courts.

The panel of Legal Officers attached to the Commission carefully scrutinises all complaints. The Commission further said that all complaints which have sufficient material for investigation are conducted thoroughly with the available resources and the co-operation of the concerned government or private institutions. The Commission said that all suspects are prosecuted in the appropriate Court of Law. The suspects are prosecuted in Court irrespective of their position or status.
