CT & FC championships attracts over 700 athletes

The 39th Senior and 28th Junior Championships of the Ceylonese Track & Field Club (CT & FC) was concluded recently at the Colombo University Grounds. Over 700 athletes from all over the country vied for honours in the Men’s and Women’s as well as Boy’s and Girl’s under 19, 17, 15, 13 and 11 age groups.

The Most Promising Young Athlete of the Championships was V. S. C. Sewwandi who established a new record in 3000 m in the under 19 age group. She was awarded the ‘Nancy de Silva Memorial Trophy’ presented by the family members in memory of the late Mrs. Nancy de Silva. The late Mrs. Nancy de Silva was a livewire of the club and served as a Vice President of the club for over a decade.

N. C. D. Priyadarshani was awarded the ‘B. R. de Silva Memorial Trophy’ for the Best Individual Performance of the Championships for her feat in Women’s High Jump. Best Individual Performance in Track events for Men and Women were won by S. B. Madugalle and E. C. Stouter and they were awarded ‘Mackwoods Challenge Trophy’ and ‘EJ Cooray Memorial Trophy’. Whilst ‘Dr. and Mrs. N. Wijesekera Memorial Trophy’ and the ‘National Panasonic Challenge Trophy’ for Field events (Men and Women) were awarded by J. A. B. Jayasekera and N. C. D. Priyadarshani respectively.

Ajantha de Soyza, Chairman Monaro Group was the Chief Guest. Sunil Gunawardeno, President of the AAA also was present at the prize distribution.
