President to make Rs 5m award to Susanthika

Olympic Bronze medalist Susanthika Jayasinghe, who brought honour to Sri Lanka will receive a cash award of Rupees five million from the Government on Friday (January 12 th).

President Chandrika Kumaratunge will make this cash award to Susanthika, on behalf of the Government , at President’s House. Minister of Sports and Tourism Lakshman Kiriella also will grace the occasion.

Susanthika the first Sri Lankan woman to win an Olympic medal, did so in the 200 metres finishing in third place. She also became the second Sri Lankan to win an Olympic medal in 52 years. She was also a silver medalist at last world Championships held in Greece.

This will be the first time that Susanthika will meet President Chandrika Kumaratunge after winning the Olympic medal. Sports Minister Lakshman Kiriella has organised this occasion to encourage the country’s ace sprinter.
