Dy. Health Minister granted bail

The Kandy High Court Judge Mr. Sisira de Abrew recorded a bail order of Rs. 10,000 with two sureties on the Deputy Health Minister Janaka Bandara Tennakoon who was on remand in connection with the death of Chaminda Dias on the last Parliamentary Election day-October 10, 2000 near the Kiralagolla polling station, in Dambulla.

Senior Counsel for the suspect Mohan Peiris and Shanaka Ranasinghe moving for bail for the suspect last Friday (09) told the High Court Judge that the suspect was receiving further treatment in a hospital after an urgent surgery.

The surgery was done in the States and presently he was under intensive care, the counsel told the Judge.

He is in a private hospital on remand, the counsel said.

A medical report on the suspect from Dr. Jayantha Balawardane, Consultant Oncologist and Radio Therapist was also submitted to court by the counsel for the subject moving for bail.

State Counsel Sudharshana de Silva, in response to court said that there were no charges against the suspect under the Offensive Weapons Act and the he (Mr. de Silva) had no objections to bail being allowed on the suspect on medical grounds.

The High Court Judge recorded the bail order of Rs. 10,000 on the suspect and with two sureties entered into a bond of Rs. 10,000 each.

Senior Counsel Mohan Peiris, Shanaka Ranasinghe, Champani Padmasekera, M. P. Jayasinghe and Hugh Perera appeared for the suspect.
