Annual Sessions of Institute of Architects

The Sri Lanka Institute of Architects will be holding its 19th Annual Sessions from the 21st to the 25th of February, 2001 at the BMICH, Colombo, Sri Lanka.

The Inauguration of the Annual Sessions is on Wednesday, the 21st of February, 2001 at 5.00 p.m. under the auspices of Minister, Mangala Samaraweera, Minister of Urban development, Construction and Public Utilities.

The Inauguration would be followed by a Public affairs Forum — Forum 2001 which would commence on Thursday, the 22nd of February at 9.00 a.m. once again under the auspices of Minister, Mangala Samaraweera and would continue throughout the 22nd and 23rd of February at the committee room B of BMICH.

The 'highlight' of this years forum, is, that eight World Renowned Architects will speak of their works, in terms of the theme of the Session "Making Architecture". Additionally 10 Member Speakers will present their works, once again in terms of this theme.

The Keynote Speaker for the forum would be Sir Jeremy Dixon of U.K. who is renowned for his works of the extensions to the Royal Opera house, Portrait Gallery and Summerset house, on which he would base his Forum Presentation, on Thursday, the 22nd February, at 9.00 a.m.

His key note address, however would be on 'London and the Millenium', which would be

delivered at the Inauguration on Wednesday, the 21st February, at 5 p.m., Prof. Lawrenece Nield of Australia, who was responsible for the design of the Olympic Stadium and other Olympic Structures at the Olympics 2000, in Sydney is also billed to speak.

Another eminent International Architect presenting a paper would be Archt. Kerry Hill of Singapore/ Australia, who was in fact the Architect of the elegant Ceylinco Seylan Towers, that loom above the skyline.

Apart from these Archt. Habib Fida Ali of Pakistan Archt. Premendra Raj Mehta of India — President of the Council of Architecture, Archt. Yolanda Reyes, who is the first woman President of the United Architects of the Philippines and the first woman Dean of the Faculty of Architecture and Archt. Hirayama of Japan.

As a ‘Grand Finale’, 8 simultaneous images will be presented by an Indian Archt Karan Grover under the title ‘A Celebration of the Making of Architecture’ on a 100ft x 15 ft screen at the Taj Samudra Hotel.

This year’s Public Affairs Forum has been a creation, under the visionary leadership of Past/Current President, Archt. Mihindu Keerthiratne, whose ideas have been carried out by the forum 2001 committe.
