| Politics and the Kra canal According to news item that appeared in The Island of 7/1/2001, Eric Solheim has shown great interest in having another round of talks with the terrorist leader. We do not see any rationality in the proposed talks with the Tigers as the government has already ruled out further talks with the terrorists. Of course, the Norwegian government has denied all this. Denials could be trotted out, but we are not certain whether the so-called visit is cancelled or postponed. The Island editorial (of 9/12/2001) reveals the hidden truth of the so-called peace peddlars. We do not require Tigers in sheeps clothing or "peace terrorists", at this juncture. Hain, Eric and company are anxious to thrust a peace accord for reasons well known to them. Singapore is overcrowded and there is no room for foreigners to expand their business. The commercial world is awaiting anxiously the opening of the Kra Canal, across the isthmus of Kra, which would gladly facilitate transportation of products from the Far East, especially from China (than through the Straits of Malacca) at less expense to eastern Indian and Sri Lankan ports. Trincomalee would blossom with vibrant activity. There lies the rub! |
