Deafening music, a deafening silence

A major culprit of noise pollution in Seeduwa is a well known hotel. It is now considered as public enemy No. 1 by the residents of Seeduwa. Its selfish behaviour would not be tolerated in any civilized society. The apathy of the authorities in dealing with the miscreants is unbelievable.

The Sri Lanka Tourist Board should monitor hotels polluting the environment with loud music from open temporary structures within their premises. The loud music usually commences at lunch time and continues till after midnight specially during weekends. The noise generated, disturbs the quiet neighbourhood resulting in children being unable to concentrate on their studies and residents being unable to sleep due to the revebrating metallic instrument sounds.

Despite several complaints to the management, no action has been taken to provide necessary acoustic requirements within the hotel. The hotel management disregards complaints from the public. Their contention is that this hotel is a five-star hotel and their clients need to be provided with loud and bawdy music and that the neighbourhood should suffer the noise in silence. I know this sounds stupid, but this is the answer given by the so-called managers of the five-star hotel.

We trust that the Environmental Authority, the Ceylon Tourist Board and other agencies will take appropriate action to control the noise pollution from this hotel.
