| Observance of poya During the past few days many views have been expressed by various persons on the observance of Poya, which has been declared a Public Holiday since the mid sixties. While the primary object of declaring the Full Moon day each month as a Public Holiday was to enable Buddhists to engage in religious activities sadly only a small percentage of the public devote this day for any purpose it was meant for. Some persons want cricket matches stopped. But what the government should do is not to permit commentaries or live telecasts of the matches on state run radio and television. It is also sad to note that the Lotteries Board too telecasts Lottery draws on Poya days on Rupavahini and ITN. Musical shows and other forms of entertainment should not be permitted to be telecast on Full Moon days since cinema halls too are prohibited from screening any movies. Over to you Minister for Buddha Sasana and Minister for Media. |
