The New Town Hall is considered to be a special gift to the people of Colombo and also to the entire country from the Colombo Municipal Council in the new millennium. Of the projects initiated for the new millennium by the Colombo Municipal Council, the new Study Hall building of the Colombo Public Library and New Millennium Centre adjoining the New Town Hall take prominence. This building was not available for the use of the general public for a considerable period of time due to its dilapidated condition. The opening of the renovated New Town Hall with all modern facilities is a great opportunity not only for the people of the Colombo city but also for the entire country. According to the available records the history of the New Town Hall runs as far back as 1954. Therefore, due consideration has to be given to protect the original architectural design and the renovations were carried out accordingly. |
