I am astonished to find teachers being transferred without proper replacement at Muslim Ladies’ College, Bambalapitiya, Colombo 4. One cannot comprehend how these transfers are sanctioned deviating from the normal procedure of obtaining a letter of release from the principal.

Parents are perturbed and wonder how good a replacement will be made.

If not for the timely intervention of the Minister of Education to withhold all teacher transfers until Sept. 2001, transfers would have taken place to the extent of even closing down the Sinhala medium temporarily.

It is pertinent that, especially when teacher transfers are executed, the respective principal’s consent or report be considered and the transfer/replacement done simultaneously, without contemplating that the respective principals can manage with relief or unsuitable excess teachers.
