She’s got a face that can be described as made for TV or for that matter any medium that uses the camera to pick up, magnify and project a personality that’s scintillating to begin with.

Kanchana Mendis is a young and upcoming actress bagged the Presidential Award for the film "Rajya Sevaya Pinisai", as the best supporting actress.

Kanchana received her award for the portrayal of the character of a private secretary "Prabashwari".

"It is a complex role and I play the role of Seetha’s daughter." This is the first award she won in recognition of her talent within her short space of her career.

She says she experienced mixed emotions when she walked up to the stage to receive the award. "I was simply overjoyed" says Kanchana.

She came into the limelight when she appeared on the advertisement ‘Ninja madurucoil’. The advertisement became popular and my face became a familiar sight. Since then there has been no looking back. Offers started pouring in to act on the small screen.

It is quite an achievement for a newcomer to get an award. Her first association with films came when she was just 12 years old, in ‘Suba Annagathayak’. She also acted in a number of other films, including the popular teledrama series "Doo Daruwo" Her role in "Damini" was liked by the audience so much that this became a popular TV serial.

Today she moves from set to set shooting for moving films and TV serials. Íhe is young but she has made up her mind to study. Íhe is folloiwng a chartered accountancy course and she says " I want to continue my studies. I don’t want to be in showbizx for long". We must give in to the new actors and actresses as one can’t hang on for long.

Her talent is not about style. Her performance has a natural ease. Right now I have many offers. I am acting in the serial on Swarnavaaahini "Satipooja" every Tuesday at 9 pm.

She has also made her debut in some of the popular films like "SansunGamanndaraya", "Makarage Thanayama", "Magul Sakwala" etc where she plays the main spot.

She has many films and TV serials in the offing. In Sunil Ariyaratne’s "Mal Ethana" my role in a village environment is something new to the viewers, says Kanchana. "Rosa Vasanthaye" directed by Udaya Kantha Warnasuriya. I play the opposite role against Ranjan Ramanayake, also a popular film to be released soon.

Youngest in a family of four, Kanchana loves music and also keeps her body trim by a carefully planned diet. "I get the co-operation of the entire family" says Kanchana with an impish smile.

As expected a lot of unexpected exciting things come Kanchana’s way without much manoeuvring on her part. For a young versatile actress who has already come a long way this definitely opens another long road of endless possibilities.
