| Unanimous approval for motion prohibiting smoking in UC
premises Batapola: "Common Sub Constitution Bill No. 6 of 1952, gazetted on 25/10/1974, has been excepted by the Ambalangoda UC as the Common Sub Constitution of the UC limits. But as there are out of date regulations in it, I would like to propose of amend this sub constitution to suit the needs of today, said Chairman of the Ambalangoda UC, M. W. Aruna Pradeep presiding over at the monthly meeting of the UC. He added that according to the prevailing constitution it was illegal even to walk on roads of the UC without a torch or a lamp, after dusk. But only very few people observe this rule and police would not take action against those who break the rule. The motion was adopted without a division. The chairman also proposed that drinking and smoking inside the UC office should be prohibited to all including the members of the UC. It too was adopted unanimously both groups appreciating the proposition. The Chairman proposed so, when discussing about the tabled letter of Director General of the Central Environmental Authority, Lional Jayawansa titled. "Pollution of the environment due to waste matter emanating from public meetings". Member K. M. Hemasiri said though he used to smoke he would not do so within the UC office in future adhering to the rule as he was humble enough to observe rules and regulations which are there for the good of the general public. Vice-Chairman, J. P. Amerasena said that the UC was compelled to pay an additional bill of Rs. 500 per month to the Electricity Board, due to the fact that those who make use of the Polwatte Piyasena playground for various musical shows and athletic meets get the electric power from the stadium. Therefore the UC should take steps to avert this illegal way of taking electric power, by asking the relevant organisers to pay the bi0ll of the respective month. Leader of the opposition, G. M. S. de Silva J. W. Jayantha, Miss W. M. Nilanie, Janith Wickrematillake, J. L. M. Fernando and Kamal Wallage also spoke. |
