| Kelaniya varsity authorities take stringent measures to quell
student unrest The administration of the Kelaniya University has taken several decisions for immediate implementation to resolve the current student unrest. The university has been affected by student violence and clashes between student factions during the past fortnight. Vice-Chancellor of the Kelaniya University, Prof. K. Tillekeratne yesterday decided to obtain the assistance of the police to maintain a temporary police presence and a regular patrolling service within the campus premises until normalcy is restored in the campus. Prof. Tillekeratne has requested the police to investigate into all complaints so far received and any others that may be made later. Among the other decisions arrived at by the university administration are: To remind the student body and to impress upon them that the civil law of the country should prevail within the university at all times and that no exceptions can be made in this regard. To prohibit inmates of hostels from leaving the hostel premises after 9.00 p.m. To ensure that all students who have not been provided residential facilities within the campus premises should leave the premises by 7.00 p.m. the latest. To prohibit all extra-curricular activities after 5.00 p.m. Intervention by the University Teachers Association to bring about peace between the two student groups involved in the conflict. To review the guidelines currently used for selection of students to University hostels and To evolve a mechanism to ensure active participation of all university teachers in the maintenance of student discipline. |
