Richmond face disciplinary action

by Ravi Nagahawatte
Richmond College, Galle faces the probability of disciplinary action being taken against them, if they fail to complete their missed fixture against Royal, a spokesman of the Sri Lanka School's Rugby Football Association (SLSRFA) told 'The Island'.

According to the official of the SLSRFA, Richmond's absence on the day of this Inter-school League Rugby Tournament fixture, leaves opponents, Royal, facing uncertainty as to whether they will become group champs and make the semi final stage of the tournament. As much as twenty four Division one teams have been drawn into four groups of six teams each to battle each other.

The tournament rules specify that only the winners of the four groups have the opportunity of making the semi final line up.

According to sources no notice has been issued till todate by the authorities of Richmond as to why they didn't turn up at the venue on the scheduled date.

It is reliably understood that if Richmond fail to complete this match before June 14 all matches in which Richmond were involved would be declared null and void by the SLSRFA as a means of being fair to all schools.

It is a known fact and a tournament rule that walk overs by schools won't be entertained by the SLSRFA.

Sources from the SLSRFA say that if the school from Galle fails to reschedule this match with Royal, before the stipulated end date of the tournament, they also risk the chance being suspended next season.

At present Royal occupy the first spot in the points table of group D with 14 points from four games with Isipatana lying second with 10 points from three tournament games.

Each team in a group is expected to play five games.

Incidentally, Isipatana in their fixture with Richmond credited themselves well in the points table when they routed the side from Galle by 69 points to 3.

According to sources from the SLSRFA authorities from both Royal and Richmond were to be called up for a special meeting, over this issue, at Ananda College yesterday.
