| The clash of the Kandyans by
Hafiz Marikar Kandy SC, after having crushed the Air Force by 65 points to 10 in their championship launch, will be at full strength, for the game against Kandy Youth SC. The latter went down to the defending league champions CH&FC in the curtain raiser by 28 points to nil. A massive crowd is expected for this game on Sunday. When writing about Kandys rugby, one cannot forget the unstinted contributions made by people such as Malik Samarawi-ckrema, Dr. Sarath Kapuwatta, the man who planned the rise of Kandy SCs rugby and at one time Kishin Butani, who when with the club, gave his wholehearted support. There are many others who gave life to Kandy SC rugby. In the early days, people like E. W. Balasuriya, Chandra Wijenayake the late Dr. C. D. L. Fernando, to name a few. Today, Kandy SC is on good footing. This year too they are likely to dominate the sport. Kandy Youth SC, is well backed by their president Janaka Pathiratne and the man who helped them to enter "A" division rugby, Maurice Perera. They have some good players in their ranks. They are led by former Sri Lanka prop Shantha Rohana. Then there is Charaka Hewawasam, Chaminda Samaratunga, Nalin Wijesinghe in the pack. Their link man M. A. Buksh, the brother of the Kandy SC hooker, is playing at his best. He pairs off with former Antonian and Kandy SC player Suranga Kodithuwakku. They also have former Trinitians, Rangika Ranasinghe, Thusitha de Silva, a fine center, Asela Perera and A. I. Niyadagala. The rugby crazy public of Kandy is expecting a good game of clean, run and pass rugby. |
