Concreting the Green!

It’s dire days for the once beautiful red promenade of Galle Face. Preparations are already afoot to concrete it from the Parliament end. The rehabilitation is costing millions to the tax payer, but with what result. Some say it is turning out to be the creation of an idiot -a capricious one at that- who has been given a box of crayons.

In the first stage of what was grandly referred to as a facelift, the green was narrowed by terracing the whole length of it with granite. Now desperate attempts are being made to grow palmyrah trees which seem to be fast dying. This is inspite of the canvas canopies obviously intended to protect the trees from the sea breeze. Already a concrete apron encircles the green, something that has never been done before.

This promenade has historical significance. It is a special feature which was constructed by the British from sheer gravel, reminiscent of the red mall opposite the Buckingham Palace.

Boards outside the Green proclaim that "rehabilitation" will be complete by May 15, but much concrete artistry has to be completed.
