The Opposition in our country today

Sam Wijesinha in his "All Experience, Essays and Reflections", writing on J. R. Jayewardene, the Parliamentarian, says that, in 1971, in the context of the first JVP insurrection in our country, "J.R. was quick to pledge support to the government". J.R. was then the leader of the UNP and also of the Opposition.

Is today’s UNP different? Doesn’t the UNP and the Opposition today realise that because of party politics and party politicians, we are today, in a political and economic mess? Don’t the party politicians of today, realise that, they have to forget their petty differences and think of the country and the people and support and work with the government of today to solve our national problem?

One has only to meet the soldier at the check point and the men in the battle field to accept the reality, that all our people and all leaders working together must solve our national problem. It is not too late for the UNP and the opposition to give up their confrontational politics.
