English a Sine Qua Non

There is no future in this world, without a knowledge of English and all practical encouragement should be given for its popularization particularly by the government in power in this country. Some talk on this aspect is now being heard in appropriate quarters. However action is less obvious.

There is lamentable inertia on the part of the Postal Department in this respect. For instance, none of the following offices, has staff competent to transact business in English.

Piliyandala Post Office

Bokundara SPO

Katuwawala SPO

Madapata SPO

Kesbewa SPO

Suwarapola SPO

Deltara SPO

The public are at a disadvantage for this simple reason. The Ministers of Education, Public Administration, Post and Telecom, should co-ordinate a scheme forthwith for more English education.

It must start at the grass-roots level from the villages in the remotest districts. English classes for working hands must start straight away by all heads of departments. There are educated pensioners, who could take on this work as teachers of English.
