SC issues notice on Ferial

The Supreme Court on Thursday issued notice on Mrs. Ferial Ashraff, Mr. M. I. M. Razeek, the National Unity Alliance, the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress, the Sri Lanka Progressive Front the Commissioner of Elections and the Secretary General of Parliament, returnanble on August 24, in respect of an application filed by Mr. Segu Dawood, S.L.M.C. Members of Parliament challenging his purported expulsion from the NUA by Mrs. Ashraff.

The petitioner had said that he was a member of the S.L.M.C. only and not of the NUA. Mrs. Ashraff could not sack him from the NUA which had no member of its own. NUA was an alliance of the S.L.M.C. and the Sri Lanka Progressive Front.

The S.L.M.C. should have if at all, conducted a disciplining inquiry against the petitioner. The petition was supported by Mr. K. N. Choksy P.C. with Mr. Daya Pelpola, Mr. Ronald Perera, Mr. Faiz, Mr. U. Abdul Najeem instructed by Mr. G. G. Arulpragasam.

The bench comprised the Chief Justice Sarath N. Silva Justice Ameer Ismail and Justice P. Edussuriya.

The respondents are to file objections by August 23.
