Inaugural Asian Junior Wushu Championships
Lankans bag three medals

Sri Lankans, Anuja Nadeeshan Kumaras-inghe and Mahesh Surendra Mendis, bagged silver medals at the 1st Asian Junior Wushu Championship held in Vietnam last month.

Kumarasinghe won a silver medal in his pet event, (Thaijiquan), for boys aged between 15-17, while Mendis won his medal in the (Sanshou) combat event for boys between the ages 15-17.

Incidentally, Mendis, earned admiration from all who were present at the manner in which he outclassed Chinese Macau’s, Lei Hong Meng, in the semi finals, before entering the final.

Mendis succumbed to Vietnam’s Phan Vanh Min in the final.

The Sri Lankan team, which comprised eight wushu players, also had the honour of adding a bronze to their medals tally when Dushan Sameera came third in the 56 kg category of the Sanshou event.

Sri Lanka ended fifth out of 16 countries which took part in the tournament.

The Sri Lankan contingent comprised - Kavindra Sandaruwan, Sudesh Chaturanga, Chamara Dharmapriya, Anuja Nadeeshan Kumarasinghe, Mahesh Surendra Mendis, Dushan Sameera, Prasanna Rasamany, Priyan Hasantha Karunatilake, Leel Roshan Dharmapriya (National coach) and Manel Dharmakeerthie (Chef de Mission).
