SLT launches WAP — enabled Telephone Directory

SLT’s on-line National Telephone Directory has been WAP-enabled. This new development is tipped to have a profound impact on Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT) customers. Now any individual, company or organisation, having a SLT number could be found by anyone from anywhere in the world even while on the move. In addition to finding the number, one can dial the number too at the touch of a button, SLT announced last week.

Last year in another pioneering move, SLT launched the National Telephone Directory on-line, which proved to be an instant success, and drove record numbers of people to the SLT web site (www.slt.lk). SLT felt that the time was right to extend this facility to the mobile Internet as well, and provide even greater value to SLT customers’ it said in a news release.

WAP stands for Wireless Application Protocol. It’s a global standard developed to make Internet services available for mobile uses. The Directory Search Engine using WAP was built by the e-business Integrator, Affno that is in the process of building a number of wireless applications for a cross section of clients.

Mobile Internet is an emerging area and WAP enabled phones are rolling out at a tremendous pace all over the world. Wireless Applications are poised for even greater popularity once GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) hits Sri Lankan market and enables access at extremely fast speeds, SLT said.
