The twelve year old twins Irusha and Charith Abeywardena had performed creditably in chess tourneys held in London recently. The duo had played in many British Chess Competitions and won certificates. The brothers are Grade 7 students of Valentines High School in East London.

Irusha participated in the UK Chess challenge 2001 and was placed 7th while Charith was placed 13th and qualified to play in the next stage of the national competition "Mega Final".

Charith also won a place to go to the University of Sheffield where the third stage of the World’s largest tournament will be held. Following the Giga final at the University of Sheffield, Charith qualified as a competitor for the Under 13 group in the UK Chess Championship.

Their parents, Upali and Chandani Abeywardena have been resident in London since 1987.

Irusha was also awarded a young scientist award (Age 11) at Gascoigne Primary School.
