Adharmista rulers, the cause of drought - Asgiriya Mahanayake

"A country becomes subject to disasters such as floods, droughts and fatigues when rulers become ‘Adharmista’ (cruel) and unjust. When rulers are pious and just a country flourishes and becomes prosperous," the most Ven. Udugama Sri Buddharakkitha Mahanayake Thero of Asgiriya observed at the distribution of dry rations to the victims of the prevailing drought in the Thanamalwila sector on Monday (03) afternoon.

The dry rations in bags worth Rs. 2,000 each from the Sri Dalada Maligawa Buddhist Welfare Fund initiated by the Diyawadana Nilame, Neranjan Wijeyeratne were gifted to 250 families of Thanamalwila.

The distribution was held at Sambodhi Vihare, Aluthgoda in Thanamalwila.

Speaking on the occasion Ven. Udugama Sri Buddharakkitha Mahanayake Thero said, "a country very unfortunately becomes subjected to disasters and fatigues where the country’s rulers become "Adharmista". Our country is now faced with a severe nature of drought that has forced people to suffer in no small measure. But we do not know why it has so happened."

"A severe drought has forced people in several parts of the country to undergo hardships without food, water and facilities to cultivate their lands. This situation is not limited to only Hambantota and Moneragala. People in many other parts of the country undergo tremendous hardships due to drought.

Several millions of people are drought stricken in the southern as well as in the North-western Province and elsewhere. They need help from people who can afford to in other parts of the country.

We must be grateful to the people and the various organisations that have already come to the rescue of the suffering people. Diyawadana Nilame, Neranjan Wijeyeratne also deserves gratitude of the people for organising a campaign to provide assistance to the victims from the Dalada Maligawa Welfare Fund.

Diyawadana Nilame, Neranjan Wijeyeratne told the meeting that the Buddhist Welfare Fund of the Sri Dalada Maligawa had taken measures to grant scholarships to poor children selected from the 250 Pradeshiya Sabha of Sri Lanka.

Ven. Matara Saddharmalankara Thero Chief Incumbent of Aluthgoda Sambodhi Vihare and Ven. Nehiniwela Piyadassi Nayake Thero of Malwatte Chapter and student Iresha Dilrukshi also spoke.

IP, Lalith Pussella, OIC, Thanamalwila police station assisted the distribution of dry rations to the victims.

Several members of the Sangha from Malwatte and Asgiriya Vihares, Diyawadana Nilame’s Private Secretary, Lakshman Dharmapriya, Administrative Officer of the Dalada Maligawa H. B. Dissanayake and Mr. K. Meegahakumbura were among those from the Sri Dalada Maligawa.
