State security should go in for dogs

When the Kolonnawa Oil Installation was attacked by terrorists, I wrote to the media that a few watchdogs, even of the ‘mongrel’ type would have averted that disaster. My letter was published and evoked comment. Every vital government institution, every remote military or police post should have a few watchdogs.

Their sense of smell and hearing, far greater than those of humans will alert any caretaker of the presence of an outsider. An intruder is generally scared of the do than of humans. The dog’s loyalty is beyond question. It can never be bought over. A good watchdog is worth its weight in gold.

The authorities should act quickly. I make bold to say that if this suggestion is rigorously carried out with immediate effect, our valuable government institutions will be safe from terrorists or any others wishing to breach the peace by introducing murder and mayhem.
