SLMC MP Rizvi Sinnalebbe dies

Rizvi Sinnalebbe, Sri Lanka Muslim Congress parliamentarian from the People’s Alliance national list, died yesterday at a private hospital.

He was 42-years-old. A family member said that he had been suffering from a kidney ailment. Sinnalebbe was a third generation parliamentarian. Both his grandfather, Mudliyar A. Sinnalebbe, and his father, Latheef Sinnalebbe, represented the Batticaloa district in Parliament. Rizvi Sinnalebbe was educated at Al-Ashraq Muslim Maha Vidyalaya, Nintavur, and at St. Thomas College, Gurutalawa.

He later did civil engineering at the University of Moratuwa, Katubedda. From 1985 to 1989 he served in Parliament as Batticaloa district parliamentarian from the United National Party. He joined the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress in 1998 and is one of seven members who defected with Rauff Hakeem from the PA in June.

He was national coordinator for the SLMC. He leaves behind his wife Nazehha and two children, a daughter Shireen and a son Nabrees. Janaza leaves his residence at 9, Dudley Senanayake Mawatha, Colombo 8, at 10 am today to the Jawatte Muslim Burial Ground. (NW)
