PA-JVP election pact likely

An election pact between the PA and the JVP to counter the combined strength of the UNP led United National Front at the forthcoming general election is most likely to be struck within the coming week, political sources said.

JVP sources said that discussions in this regard would take place in the next few days. They also said the PA had invited JVP for a discussion on Saturday but it had not taken place as the JVP was unaware of what the discussion was about. JVP sources did not rule out the possibility of coming to a mutual understanding on a campaign arrangement with PA since they had decided to contest the election alone in all twenty two districts.

Minister Mangala Samaraweera is reported to have indicated that the post-dissolution MoU with the JVP could be revived as it was not violated by either of the two parties. Before the dissolution, sources said that the JVP had told the government not to prorogue parliament this time around. After the dissolution the JVP was quick to praise the government on the move and castigate the crossover MPs as jackals who had been bought over.

Political observers pointed out that the campaign slogan adopted by the JVP, linking the UNP with the Tigers as "Ali-Koti" for the coming general election is more in line with the PA slogan during the previous election, and is a departure from the JVP’s former slogan against both the parties "Ali-Putu-horu."
