Edward Suranga Fernando started his carrier in gymnastics at the age of eight at Maris Stella College, Negombo, under the guidance of Mervyn Mendis, of the college tutorial staff and a senior judge of the Gymnastics Association of Sri Lanka.

He won many medals and certificates at All Ceylon Gymnastic meets, and in 1996, he was appointed a judge of the events of men’s and women’s artistic gymnastics.

He then proceeded to the United Kingdom, on the invitation of Anne Pope, director general of the "Pinewood" Gymnastics Centre, and followed a course of training and was successfull in the final examination, so as to be registered as a judge of the events of men’s and women’s artistic gymnastics in the United Kingdom.

In a subsequent course of training for sport aerobics - a new concept developed recently - was conducted by the Federation of International Gymnastic (FIG) in the United Kingdom.

Nineteen trainees were selected from around the world and Edward S. Fernando was among them; perhaps the sole representative from Sri Lanka, and the only trainee from a Far Eastern country.

Today, he is a registered judge in the United Kingdom for sport aerobics.

At present, Fernando is attached to the tutorial staff of Maris Stella College as well as being the assistant gymnastics coach. He trains students of Ave Maria Convent in gymnastics, whilst associating with the National Gymnastics Federation of SriLanka.

He also closely associates with the International Gymnastics Federation, to promote sport aerobics in Sri Lanka.
