Sri Lanka Army and Peradeniya University won the Men’s and Women’s titles respectively at the Intermediate Weightlifting championship, organised by the Sri Lanka Weightlifting Federation.

This annual event was worked off at the Peradeniya University Gymnasium. Assistant Secretary of the Sri Lanka Weightlifting Federation Palitha K. Maddage and other committee members worked tirelessly to make the event a success.

In the Men’s championship, Sri Lanka Army gained 22 points to take first place. Second place was shared by Kandy YMCA and Polonnaruwa W.C. with 14 points each.

G.M.A.S. Bandara of Polonnaruwa W.C. club won the Men’s best lifter’s award.

In the Women’s event, Peradeniya University took first place with 10 points and second place went to Torrington WC and Menikdiwella WC. S.P. Paduruarachchi was named the women’s best lifter.

The Headquarters of Weightlifting’s controlling body, is the only one which is housed out of Colombo. They have been doing a good job by producing several International lifters, but sad to say still they don’t have a house of their own. It is high time the Sports Ministry of the Provincial Council, looked into this matter.
