20 Sri Lankan teens prepare for 2002 Future World Leaders Summit

Joining 400 of the world’s top student leaders in USA in March 2002 will be 20 brilliant Sri Lankan teenagers from 9 schools. They will participate in the Future World Leaders Summit along with 34 other countries. This international youth summit is held at the Georgetown University in Washington DC. The summit bi-annually brings together 400 student leaders from 35 countries around the world to explore international relations, diplomacy and the changing world economy. Today, more than ever before, this international summit becomes relevant in the face of a global war on terrorism when diplomacy and international relations are used extensively.

The Future Leaders Summit participants are in the ages of 16 and 19 years with a very high command of the English language, good academic record, active in school or community organizations and have the approval of their school principal. The March 2002 Sri Lanka delegation consists of 6 from Colombo International School, 4 from Asian International School, 4 from Ladies College, each from St. Thomas Prep, British School in Colombo, Stafford International School, Australian College of Business and Technology, Informatics Institute of Technology and Visaka Vidyalaya Colombo.

The National Association of Secondary School Principals of America and American National Education Associations endorse the programe for preparing young people for civic responsibilites and the challenges of tomorrow. This summit and the Organisers Presi-dential Classroom are affiliated with the Newsweek education program. Last year, Presidential Classroom received the George Washington honor medal of the Freedoms Foundation for outstanding community service to the world.

The March 2002 Sri Lanka delegation posed for their first group photo last week at the Presidential Classroom Office in Colombo.
