S.Thomas’ Super 7’s Rugby
Ruhunu RFC beat Royal 12-10

Little known Ruhunu Rugby Football Club etched their name in gold at the inaugural S.Thomas’ Super ‘Sevens’ Rugby Tour-nament when they beat fancied Royal College by 12 points to 10 and won the Cup Championship Trophy, at Longden Place, on Sunday.

Ruhunu RFC, which had an inspiring run up to the final, snatched victory from the Royalists through a snap try by K. H. Tharanga after being led 10-5.

The victory marked their best ever performance in the sport having taken to rugby only a few years ago.

Udesh Senewiratne scored the other try for the winners while Mohan Tiroshan made the history making conversion.

The match wining side comprised Udesh Senewiratne, K. H.Tharanga, Mohan Tiroshan, C. P. De Zoysa, Lakmal Jayawar-dana, Sathishka Ekanayake, Kingsley Arjuna, D.Bopage, Vidura Ruwandika, Erosh Arjuna, Nuwan Silva, and Rasika Prasad.

The Plate Championship Tro-phy was won by Thurstan who scored a runaway 19-0 win over St. Anthony’s.

Lumbini found themselves losers in extra time after going down to Isipatana 22-17 in the Plate Championship Trophy final.

Isipatana Old Boys, led by Hisham Abdeen annexed the Cup Championship Trophy in the Old Boy’s Over 35 competition when they beat the Old Boys of St. Peter’s 19-7.

Hisham Abdeen (Captain), Ananda Fernando, Shiyam Sideek, K.D.Nanayakkara, Baratha Hegoda, Senaka Balasuriya, Gamini Indrasena, Anwar Jaya, S.Y .Norman, Azar Samsudeen, M. D. Ifthikar, D.P. Udesiri, Bharatha Mendis and Ajith Tilakasiri turned out for the winners.
