A tribute to a loving grandmother - Wimala Abeyratne

It has been 3 months since you left us, but I remember like it was just the other day with that last breath you bid us farewell. That fateful night is engraved in my memory and will never fade away. We know we must go on, so we do, but life just is not the same without you.

It was only a month before, when we all sat together listening to pirith in celebration of your 80th birthday. You looked so happy and content. Who knew a month later you would not be there to grace us with you presence ever again.

My grandmother, Wimala Abeyratne, lived a very happy and full life. The eldest of five siblings, was a school teacher until her marriage to my grandfather, K. P. C. Abeyratne (founder Hasthigiri Hotels & Bakery). Widowed at the age of 59 after the tragic and sudden death of her husband, she devoted her time among her four daughters and their families. She was a devout Buddhist and was involved with various religious charities and activities, and a loyal patron to numerous temples. For more than 10 years she hosted a monthly bana for family and friends in memory of her late husband.

She was indeed a much-loved person not only by her family but also her friends. Even those who only knew her for a short time had a special fondness towards her. Despite ha many achievements in life and all the luxuries bestowed upon her, she indeed remained an essentially simple person.

Like I mentioned before, it has only been 3 months,

But there are no words that could describe how much we miss you.

Not a day goes by without remembering you.

Thank you for all that you have taught us.

Thank you for all that you have given us.

But most of all, thank you for all the laughter and wonderful memories.

We will indeed cherish them forever!

May you attain the supreme bliss of Nirvana!
