Manjula and Niluka in final

Manjula Fernando and Niluka Karunaratne qualified to meet each other in the men’s open final, at the 49th National Badminton Cham-pionship being conducted at the SLBA Indoor Stadium.

The final was to be played last evening.

Manjula, the number five seed recorded an upset victory over top the seeded D.D. Ranasinghe in a three setter semi final. Fernando lost the first set 10-15 but came back strongly to beat Ransinghe in the next two 15-2, 15-3. In the other men’s open semi final, Niluka Karunaratne of Royal College, the third seed, beat Niroshan John 15-2, 15-12.

Meanwhile, Chandrika de Silva and Dilhani de Silva clinched the women’s doubles defeating Sriyani Deepika and Tharaka Abeywickrama 15-6, 15,2. Chandrika partnered Kamal Gamlath to win the mixed doubles beating Clarence Homer and Sriyani Deepika in the final. Chandrika, with two titles in the bag, will be looking for the triple crown. She was to meet Dilhani de Silva in the women’s open final.

In the men’s doubles semi finals, Manjula Fernando and Palinda Halangoda scored an upset victory. The unseeded pair defeated the top seeded combination of D.D. Ranasinghe and Udaya Wanasinghe 15-3, 15-4. Kamal Gamlath together with Clarence Homer won the other semi final. They beat Niluka Karunaratne and Thanuja Liyanage in a three setter 8-15, 15-6, 15-7.

The men’s and women’s open singles finals and men’s doubles final were scheduled to be played yesterday, from 4 pm onwards.
