Lifting power cut only an election tactic - UNP

The UNP alleged that the lifting of the powercut is a "temporary election exercise" of the government and it would be re-imposed in a drastic manner after the election on December 5 if the PA wins.

Former UNP MP John Amaratunga told a press briefing that a UNP government would take immediate steps in the short term to provide uninterrupted powercuts and go ahead with medium term and long term power generation plans to provide the required electricity for the future.

He said the engineers at the CEB has warned that water levels in the major reservoirs are bound to deplete in a few weeks time due to inadequate rains and powercuts are imminent. He charged that corruption at the CEB by high officials and politicians has led to the present power crisis.

He cited instances where the CEB is buying electricity at a higher price and selling at a lesser price from private generators who have been handed over the facility through improper means when certain private generators had agreed to sell at a lesser price.

Former UNP MP P. Dayaratne alleged that Minister Anuruddha Ratwatte is talking "gibberish" by saying that the power crisis is over and there will be uninterrupted power supply hereafter. He said that according to CEB engineers another 1000 mega watt generation capacity is needed to stop the power cut. He charged that Minister Ratwatte has proved his incompetence by making a mockery of the war and now doing the same with the power and energy sector.
