Singer Ruhunu Rugby 7s tomorrow

The Singer Sri Lanka sponsored, Ruhunu Rugby Football Union organized, Inter club ‘Sevens’ will be conducted at St. Aloysius College grounds, this weekend.

A total of 19 teams have entered the fray, in this two-day tournament, starting tomorrow, which is confined to teams within the Southern Province.

The teams have been divided into four groups and will play each other within their respective groups. The winners of the groups will go into the Cup Championship, the runners up will vie for the Plate and the third placed teams will go for the Bowl.

President of the Ruhunu Rugby Football Union Kumar Abeywardene said that this tournament had been confined to clubs within the Southern Province, so as to generate more interest amongst the people of the Ruhunu and give all the clubs in the South an opportunity to participate in a tournament of their own.

According to Tony Amit, of CH&FC and Sri Lanka coaching fame, who has done wonders with Rugby in Galle and is assisting Kumar Abeywardene with the development of the sport in the South, plans are being made to conduct a tournament for emerging clubs on January 19 and 20, 2002 followed by an open inter club tournament during the following weekend.

The Groups:

‘A’ - Galle RFC ‘A’, Hambantota RFC ‘B’, Old Richmondites RFC, Matara RFC ‘B’, Old Devapathirajans RFC.

‘B’ - Ruhunu RFC ‘B’, Bentota RFC, Old Thomians RFC Matara, Matara Police’A’, Ambalangoda RFC.

‘C’ - Galle RFC ‘B’, Matara RFC ‘A’, Hambantota RFC ‘A’, Old Vidyaloka RFC, Baddegama RFC.

‘D’ - Ruhunu RFC ‘A’ Koggala RFC, Old Aloysians RFC, Matara Police ‘B’.
