Deputy Speaker gets his bodyguards

By Chitra Weerarathne
Major General Sarath Munasinghe, former Deputy Speaker of Parliament, has been granted the full contingent of eleven bodyguards from the Army.

D. P. Mendis P.C. told the Supreme Court last week that his client, the Defence Secretary had complied with the recommendations of the Human Rights Commission, and opted to give these security officers from the Army.

Upul Jayasuriya, counsel for Sarath Munasinghe, said that he had been told the same by the legal officer of the Army. He had yet to receive any further instructions from his client.

Major General Munasinghe in a Fundamental Rights violation plea had complained to the Supreme Court that his bodyguards were withdrawn, consequent to his resignation from the SLFP and joining the UNP. He had said he was at the mercy of the LTTE now, after having served in the operational areas of the North and the East.

The Deputy Solicitor General Palitha Fernando appeared for the Army Commander, the first respondent in this petition.

The Bench comprised, the Chief Justice Sarath N. Silva, Justice Dr. Shirani Bandar-anayake and Justice P. Edussuriya.
