| Sri Lankans go to the polls today Polling for todays general elections will commence at 7.00 a.m.and end at 4.00 p.m. in 9981 polling stations islandwide. The number of voters registered is 12,428,762. Though some of them have not received their official poll cards it would not be a hindrance to exercise their franchise. The counting of postal votes will commence today at 4.00 p.m. and the first result would be declared by 10.00 p.m., Elections Department sources said. The sources further said that counting of votes will commence after checking the postal voting results of different polling stations in the country, and that the results of all districts could be declared by noon on Thursday (06). But the results of preferential votes could be declared only by tomorrow evening, the sources said. |
