Double standards by British govt, says SU

The Sihala Urumaya wrote to the British High Commissioner on Monday strongly condemning what it termed the double standards of the British government on terrorism.

"We wonder why the British government is having double standards on terrorism - one standard for Osama Bin Laden and his A1 Qaeda movement and another standard for terrorist Prabhakaran and his murderous LTTE," said the fax, commenting on the inaction on the part of the British government to stop a December 1 Heroes’ Day meeting organised by the British Tamil Association, a front for the LTTE.

The event, the party says, was advertised through the LTTE controlled media and Tamil owned shops, even though no mention was made of the LTTE.

The SU said that the meeting had been addressed by chief LTTE spokesman ‘terrorist Anton Balasingham’ who had made mention of the "SU and the National Movement Against Terrorism as the two organisations that are thwarting their struggle against Eelam".

The SU said that even though no fee had been charged to attend the event, food and a directory had been sold to raise funds.

The letter has also been copied to the Minister of Foreign Affairs.
