Crowd sets fuel station ablaze

KANDY: Hundreds of Muslims, up in arms against the slaughter of 10 Muslim youth in a vehicle at Talawinna in the afternoon of the December 5, demonstrated at the Madawala Bazaar and are alleged to have set ablaze a fuel pumping station at Madawala at dawn yesterday.

The dead youths, all between 19-31 of age, were residents of Madawala, it was claimed.

After the burial, the Muslims of Madawala had come out in a demonstration calling for the arrest of those responsible for the killings.

Following the blowing up of the fuel station and the attacks on some boutiques in the bazaar, a police curfew has been declared in the area of Madawala and Wattegama, police said.

No arrests have been made. Investigations are proceeding by a team of police officers led by IP Upali Nawalage, OIC Wattegama police station on the directions of DIG Mahinda Balasuriya and SSP Asoka Ratnaweera.
