Kandy PA contestant, three others remanded over poll violence

The Kandy Municipal Council’s People’s Alliance (PA) member Tikiri Kobbekaduwa who was a (PA) contestant for the Kandy district at the December 5 general elections was remanded till Wednesday 12 by the Kandy Chief Magistrate Leon Seneviratne on Monday.

The magistrate remanded Tikiri Kobbekaduwa along with three others when they were produced in court by Kadugannawa police for their alleged involvement in destructive activities in the Kadugannawa police area during the election period.

Police told the magistrate that there were complaints against the suspects and they were being investigated and moved that they be remanded.

A team of attorneys led by Presidents Counsel Wijaya Wickremaratne moving for release of the suspects told court that there was no evidence to prove their involvement in violent activities nor could any dangerous weapons be produced.

Magistrate Leon Seneviratne ordered the Kandy police to forward a fresh report about the case on the next date.

Attorneys M. P. Jayasinghe, Rohitha Tennakoon, Rukshan Lenora, Upali Bogalawatte and Kithsiri Seneviratne appeared for the suspects.

M. Nimal Dharmapriya with SI Dehigama produced the suspects in court.
