851 police personnel being investigated for election offences

The Police Department has commenced investigations into complaints against 851 police personnel of various ranks from DIG downwards alleging that they had connived with politicians belonging to various parties and flouted the Elections Act and acted in a partial manner during the recently concluded parliamentary elections, Senior Deputy Inspector General, T. E. Anandarajah yesterday said.

According to complaints received by police headquarters investigations were launched against 851 police personnel including a DIG, 5 ASPs, 2 SP’s, 11 ASPs and 20 OICs, the DIG stated.

These police personnel are alleged to have connived with politicians and helped them to rigging of polls, impersonation, and threatening voters who went to polling booths and preventing them from voting among the many other crimes, he said.

Once investigations are completed action would be taken to charge them or take disciplinary action against these police personnel, some of whom had used pressure on subordinates, said senior DIG T. E. Anandarajah yesterday.
