| President conveys deep concern to Vajpayee President Chandrika Kumaratunga in a message to Indian Premier Atal Behari Vajpayee has expressed deep concern on the attack on the Indian Parliamentary Complex. She has called upon India to commit itself to eliminate terrorism. Following is the full text of the message: "I was deeply disturbed to hear of the attack on the Indian Parliamentary Complex. This was clearly an assault on the bastion of Indian democracy by terrorists who cannot countenance, and wish to destroy the free, open societies of the democratic world. Again and again as terrorism strikes, we have to strengthen our resolve never to yield and always to stand resolute against intimidation, sabotage and destruction. "I was immensely relieved to learn that no member of the Indian Parliament was harmed. "As a country that has long lived with terrorism we fully understand the feelings of the government and people of India at this time. At the bilateral level, I have assured the Prime Minister of our unwavering support for the efforts of the government to combat the menace of terrorism in India. At the international level, I would like to reiterate our belief, which I am sure you, Excellency, the Government and people of India share, that all States must commit themselves irrevocably to a relentless battle against terrorism until it is eliminated altogether. "Please accept, Excellency, the assurance of my highest consideration." |
